White collar employees missing out on OHnS Inductions
Monday, August 25, 2008 at 12:26 PM The Quarterly Workplace Pulse Survey has reported that only one-third of the on-hire employees in the clerical sector receive an Occupational Health and Safety Induction. "So what" I hear you say. Well consider this. The survey noted some troublesome findings. For instance:
Failing to provide adequate information regarding emergency exits, evacuation procedures or the location of a first aid box. Half of the respondents said employers were not checking workstations to ensure they met ergonomic standards, given this is one of the main causes of spinal and neck injuries in an office environment, costing employers millions in down time and absenteeism, this can be deemed to be a major concern. The survey also found that employers failed their on-hire employees by not telling them about major hazards including instruction on safe lifting techniques. If you've ever put your back out you will appreciate how debilitating this can be.
So, the message - no matter where you work, always ensure you receive an Occupational Health and Safety Induction. Your health depends on it.
